The Tricity region of Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula is set to experience a significant transformation with the introduction of the Tricity Metro Network, a two-coach metro system under the proposed mass rapid transit system (MRTS) project. The updated Phase 1 of the Tricity Metro Network now includes a comprehensive coverage of 77 km, an expansion from the initial 66 km. The detailed breakdown of the metro coverage is as follows:

  • Panchkula: 11 km
  • Mohali/New Chandigarh: 31 km

Additionally, Phase 1 incorporates key extensions that were initially part of Phase 2:

 An 11-kilometer extension, including a 6-kilometer stretch linking Paroul in New Chandigarh to Sarangpur.

Route 1: Spanning 32 kilometers runs from Paroul in New Chandigarh to Sector 28 in Panchkula. Key stops include Sarangpur, PGI, Panjab University, and Chandigarh railway station. The segment from PGI to Transport Chowk will operate underground.

Route 2: Covering approximately 36 kilometers, this route links Sukhna Lake to Zirakpur ISBT, passing through Mohali ISBT and Chandigarh Airport. The underground section extends from Sukhna Lake to Sector 43.

Route 3: This fully elevated 14-kilometer line runs from Grain Market Chowk in Sector 39 to Transport Chowk in Sector 26.

Chandigarh Tricity Metro Project Cost and Funding

The idea for developing the Chandigarh Metro will likely cost about Rs.  11,000 crore, as per the latest updates. Under this funding plan, Haryana and Punjab will each contribute 20% of the total cost, with an additional 20% coming from the Central government. The remaining 60% of the project cost will be financed by a lending agency.

In July 2023, the Chandigarh administration initiated collaboration with all stakeholders to prepare. The Alignment-cum-Feasibility Report (AAR) and Detailed Project Report (DPR) are according to central government guidelines.
