Recent incidents in Himachal Pradesh and Punjab have drawn attention to growing tensions between the two states over the display of posters and flags featuring Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. Authorities and community leaders are working to maintain peace and ensure that law and order prevail.
What Happened in Himachal Pradesh?
The issue started in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, when some bikers from Punjab displayed flags with Bhindranwale’s image. Local residents objected, leading to a disagreement. Police intervened and took action under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Another incident was reported in Manikaran, where a resort owner claimed that a dispute over a flag led to an altercation between some tourists from Punjab and local residents. A separate case in Kasol involved tourists refusing to pay a local maintenance fee, leading to a minor clash. Authorities are investigating these incidents to prevent further issues.
Reactions in Punjab
In response, some groups in Punjab were seen pasting Bhindranwale’s posters on Himachal Pradesh transport buses. Videos of these incidents circulated online, leading to concerns about rising tensions. However, no formal complaints were filed, and the Punjab police assured that the situation was under control.
On March 18, 2025, an incident occurred near Kharar in Mohali, Punjab, where a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus traveling from Chandigarh to Hamirpur was attacked. Two masked individuals in a car with concealed license plates intercepted the bus near the Shivjot Enclave bridge. One assailant vandalized the front windshield with a stick, causing panic among the approximately 20 passengers on board. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the incident.
